Mobile EdTech App Development for Preschool Education

Education

A case study of building and evolving a mobile educational app for children aged 4–6: gamified learning journeys, personalized learning scenarios, and AI-based attention monitoring within a parent-child ecosystem.

Mobile EdTech App for Early Childhood Education

About the Project

Education / EdTech • iOS, Android, Web • Mobile Learning Platform

Minter Group builds digital products in the education and EdTech space. One of its flagship initiatives is the European Center for Preschool Education (ECDO) — an interactive online platform designed to help children aged 4–6 get ready for school.

A key differentiator of the product is its high level of gamification: learning happens through interactive games and exercises created by preschool educators and child psychologists. The app’s main character is a friendly dragon named Eddy, who helps children stay engaged and curious throughout the learning journey.

Goal

Build the ECDO mobile platform for iOS and Android with integrated game modules and AI-powered functionality.

Project objectives:

  • Develop a mobile app for iOS and Android
  • Integrate game modules built with Construct (HTML5)
  • Implement registration, learning flows, progress tracking, and homework functionality
  • Create a React-based web version for the MVP stage
  • Introduce AI-based attention monitoring during lessons
  • Ensure compliance with Russian Federal State Educational Standards and applicable local regulations

Challenges

Game Module Integration

One of the core technical challenges was embedding dozens of games created with Construct (HTML5). Each game had its own logic and performance requirements. We designed a universal integration mechanism that synchronized data between the games and the main app, ensuring stable performance across both iOS and Android.

AI-Based Attention Monitoring

We implemented a child attention monitoring module. The system uses the front-facing camera together with face recognition algorithms to estimate the learner’s level of engagement during a lesson. If the child loses focus, the app pauses the activity until attention is restored.

Frictionless Sign-Up and Multi-Profile Support

Registration takes just a few taps: parents can sign in using VK, Google, or Apple ID. A single parent account can include multiple child profiles, making it easy to track progress for each learner individually.

Homework and Notifications

Homework, videos, and PDF materials automatically appear in the dedicated Homework section. Push notifications remind parents about new lessons, while supporting materials can be printed for offline activities.

Personalized Learning Path

At the start, the app invites parents to take a short assessment that identifies the child’s preferred learning style: auditory, visual, or kinesthetic. Based on these inputs, the system adjusts lesson difficulty and pacing. Content and game mechanics adapt to the individual learner’s needs.

How We Delivered It

Phase 1. MVP (6 months, 2021)

During the first phase, we built the mobile app and a web version of ECDO. The client provided the original design assets, which we used for the MVP. The app was integrated with the platform API and with game modules created by the client in Construct. The games were embedded as interactive widgets and synchronized with the progress tracking system.

Phase 2. Product Growth and Scaling

After the MVP launch proved successful, the client decided to focus on the mobile platform, while the web version was no longer developed further. We took full ownership of the project’s design, growth, and support, adding new courses, new parent-facing functionality, and an improved UX.

New Design and UX

After the MVP stage, we completely redesigned the visual experience: replacing static lesson lists with an interactive lesson map, adding animated transitions and character motion, optimizing the interface for children’s perception, and making controls larger, softer, and safer to interact with.
